Thri-Kreen

The industrious thri-kreen are a social people, who as a society value society itself. This extends to the societies of allies, whom the thri-kreen are eager to connect their roads to and thus increase the reach of civilization and help the exchange of ideas.

Building, Improving, and Maintaining Society

Thri-kreen are generally responsible for the infrastructure which connects populations of those species/races available to the player. This includes both terrestrial and subterranean roads.

The architecture of the thri-kreen is built to last, consisting of archways, smooth surfaces, and repeated patterns.

Thri-kreen have explored the open lands further and the Underdark more deeply than any other of the civilized peoples. Some members of their population work at the edge of the frontier, scouting for new locations to expand to or protecting civilization at the outskirts.

The Castes

The three castes of the thri-kreen are quite distinct from one another, both in form and in function.

WORKER CASTE: Hard working and driven by a curiosity to explore, the worker caste is the most populous and forms the bedrock of thri-kreen society. This caste holds a wide variety of outdoor professions, including cartographers, scouts, builders, crafters, miners, field medics, and the like.
Workers are sturdy folk, skilled with their hands, and able to climb vertical walls as easily as walking.

SOLDIER CASTE: Just as social as all thri-kreen, the imposing-looking soldiers are in fact gentle giants. However when danger presents itself, the soldier caste is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.
Members of this caste are typically stationed at the boundaries of civilization, protecting roads from the encroaching wilds.
Soldiers are large, durable, and with thicker carapaces than other thri-kreen.

FERTILE CASTE: Refered to by the thri-kreen as "founders", these members make up the noble class, often filling positions of bureaucracy or study. They typically lead protected lives, kept at the center of civilization and rarely venturing off the safe roads and into the wilds.
Unlike the other two genderless castes, this caste contains members of each gender. Those who choose to breed generate a clutch of 4-6 eggs per year.
Founders are educated, well-groomed, and sport lustrous wings of clear, orange, blue, or iridescent hues.

Caste Dynamics

Members of one caste are known to try their hand at the duties traditionally assigned to other castes, but they must deal with prejudices and generally must do more to prove themselves.

The worker and solder castes view each other as peers of a sort, and often form lasting friendships. Whereas they treat the fertile caste as one would treat delicate but highly respected elders, regardless of age.

Thri-kreen live as a communal family. The fertile caste does not raise their own children: The eggs are sent to nurseries, cared for by the worker caste. All of the fertile caste is viewed as the parents of everyone. Thri-kreen do not view themselves as having two parents, they have a crowd of parents.
But this relationship is not as close as the traditional bond between parent and child. The fertile caste treats the other castes as members of a society which they hold dear. It is the whole population which is seen as a single child, not the individuals. The founders speak to individuals warmly, but typically without a curiosity for the intricacies of that person.

In mixed societies, it is still hard for a thri-kreen to let go of these roles. Those of the soldier and worker castes will still find it easy to share a pint. But if a member of the third caste were present, the air becomes more formal. In dangerous situations, the safety of the founders (fertile caste) is on the minds of the other castes.

Appearance

There is a wide variety of color and pattern variation among the different thri-kreen bloodlines, spanning most colors imaginable. Some of the nocturnal clans even sport a coat of short fur sprouting from parts of their exoskeletons.
Thri-kreen have six limbs. However their middle pair of arms are exceptionally weak and can't be used for extra weapons. But they can be used for carrying small items.
