Letter From Emma to Hazel

Dearest Hazel,

Although much of my time is required for training local doctors on our medical advances, my off hours have been spent enjoying the wonderful land and people of Panama. How I do wish you were here to share the experience, as you would enjoy it greatly! And thank you for your advice on local customs, it has proven most useful. I'm afraid I would have embarrassed myself many times over were it not for your knowledge of other cultures.

As you are aware I did have my initial reservations, having heard horror stories from my father concerning his dangerous ordeal crossing Panama on his way to California. But now that the canal is in place, it looks to have changed for the better. Overall I'm quite glad that Dr Harold convinced me to go on this journey. His contact here, Emmanuel Martinez, has been very friendly and attentive. And what a character: he looks to be from a prouder, bygone era. He is an elderly gentleman of the best sort, sporting a curved mustachio and carrying a good stature despite using an ornate cane to support an underdeveloped leg. He was a canal engineer of some prominence, and is almost entirely responsible for putting together this medical training program.

Only yesterday Emmanuel showed me to local vendors selling antiquated pottery at practically no cost, it was too tempting to pass up. If only you were there to select the best specimens. I'll make sure to send some your way for the museum. Ever the gentleman, Emmanuel volunteered to handle the packaging personally.

I should be returning at the start of September, and look forward to our customary talks. There will be so much to catch up on!

Sincerely,
   Emma
